CHAPTER 15

“Here’s your key,” Ruth said, handing the couple the card. “And this is a map of Seaside Bay’s Main Street shops. There’s some really fun, little stores, but the best is Sassy Sweets and Cookies Up! You have to give them a try while you’re in town.”

“Thank you,” the woman said with a smile, taking the offering.

“You’re welcome.” Ruth set her hands on the counter. “Be sure and let me know if there’s anything else you need.” She pointed to the left. “Your room is down that way.”

The man nodded and put his hand on his wife’s back, leading her away.

Whatcha up to?

The buzz in Ruth’s pocket made her jump and she smiled when she read the text.

Not much. Just selling rooms as fast as I can.

Is there anything you can’t do?

Ruth laughed and her thumbs flew.

I can’t fly. I hate asparagus. And I can’t get off work today.

“That’s a pretty specific list.”

Ruth jumped again and gasped, whirling to find Jude grinning from the side entrance. “Oh my gosh,” she said breathlessly. “How did you get there?”

Jude’s eyebrows rose and he looked at the door before coming back to her.

Ruth rolled her eyes. “How did you get in without me hearing you?”

“You were too busy offering advice to that couple,” Jude stated with a grin. He sauntered over. “I’m sure they’ll appreciate it. So will Caro.”

Ruth smiled and shook her head. “Well, with treats like hers, they deserve to be talked up a bit.”

Jude glanced at his phone screen. “So you really can’t get off today?”

Ruth sighed and slumped onto the stool they kept at the desk. “No. Grandma isn’t here.”

“Does she normally run this place all by herself?” Jude asked, leaning his hip against the counter. “How did she manage before you got here?”

“She had a couple of teenagers who helped her out,” Ruth explained. “But both of them decided they’d rather take some time off when I showed up.” She laughed. “I think they were bored to death. I mean, I enjoy meeting people, but most teens aren’t that into socializing with strangers.”

Jude nodded and glanced around before his eyes landed on her stool. “Is there another one of those in the kitchen?”

Ruth looked then and frowned. “I think so. Why?”

Jude walked purposefully past the desk, straight to the break room. “Just a moment.” He came back out a few seconds later, carefully maneuvering the stool so as not to hit the walls.

“Jude,” Ruth exclaimed. “You don’t really want to hang around the desk with me.”

“Why not?” he asked, setting the seat down and joining her.

“Because it’s boring,” she said plainly. “I just explained that.”

“Are you here?”

Ruth paused. “Yes.”

“Then it’s not boring.”

Ruth couldn’t help herself. She reached out and cupped his face, pulling him in for a soft kiss. “Careful, Mr. Lisbon,” she whispered against his lips. “You’ll sweep me off my feet.”

“Then my work here will be done,” he said before taking her mouth in a much more heated exchange than Ruth had initiated.

Not that she was complaining.
